5th Grade Summer Reading

2019-2020

 

Students entering 5th grade are required to read three books:

  1. Required Fiction

Lemonade War  – Jacqueline Davies

 

Design a newspaper advertisement for either Jessie’s or Evan’s lemonade stand. Type or write a slogan for the lemonade stand, and include it in the advertisement.

 

Write or type a summary of the story that is 6 to 10 sentences.This summary will include important events in the story. What is the main action? Who does it involve? What problem or problems are the characters trying to solve? How do they solve them?

Students will be tested on this selection within the first two weeks of school.

 

  1. Choose TWO books from the following list and complete the written assignment outlined below.

  • The One and Only Ivan - Katherine Applegate

  • The Witches - Roald Dahl

  • Jackie and Me - Dan Gutman

  • Flush – Carl Hiaasen

  • Crenshaw -  Katherine Applegate

  • Frindle - Andrew Clements

 

Choose one book and complete the story elements worksheet included with the summer reading assignment. Due the second week of school. Please download the document from the FORMS page.  

 

Choose a different book from the list above and create a Who Am I Riddle? Using a riddle format, create a list of 7-10 riddle facts that would describe a character in your book.

5th Grade Summer Math

This summer we are using Khan Academy as the basis for our summer math practice. Your task will be to complete lessons using the Khan Academy platform. This extra practice will ensure you stay current with the material taught in the 2019-2020 school year.

 

Logging In (YOU MUST LOG IN TO HAVE YOUR WORK TRACKED! IF YOU DO NOT LOG IN, THERE WILL BE NO RECORD OF YOUR WORK!)

 

1. First go to  https://www.khanacademy.org/login

2. Then click allow

3. Once you have logged in with your Google account (the same account you use for Duolingo and Google Classroom), you need to add Shannon Denhof as your coach.

Go to the HOME screen and select COACHES

Enter sdenhof@ascsde.org in the Add a coach window, and click “Join the class”.

4. Click the upper left corner where it says “Subjects”

5. Then under Math by grade, click 4th grade

6. Then click Practice

7. Complete the practice activities (with stars)  under Addition and Subtraction & Multiplication and Division.
