Week 5

In the Classroom

Religion: This week, students will begin to work on Chapter 2. They will learn about the Blessed Trinity. This can be a confusing topic to think of God as Three Persosns. They will learn that God sent his own Son, Jesus to us, that Jesus is God’s greatest gift, and that One God is made of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This chapter quiz will be Wednesday (8/2).

To help your child prepare for the quiz, remind them that the Holy Spirit is our helper. Prayer is not only talking to God, but signing and worshiping, and going to church are all forms of prayer. God promised to send Jesus to help us. There is only one God. We pray to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit when we pray the Sign of the Cross. Remind them of the Three Persons of the Blessed Trinity: God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Sprit.

Fundations: Students will continue to work on their phonemic awareness of letters and learn the keyword we use to remember how the letter sounds. This week students will learn x, y, z, and q. They will also have a small assessment on writing the letters of the alphabet and identifying some letter sounds. At this point, the students have learned all of the letter sounds, so we will start to put those sounds together to make words

Math: This week in math, students will practice their skills from last week: problem solving, making 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. Students will have a math quiz Tuesday, October 1. After the quiz, students will learn ways to 9 and 10, they will find missing parts of 10, and work on True and False Statements. Students are projected to have a math test next Tuesday, October 8 for chapter 1.

Science: Last week, we became engineers and helped solve a problem! This week, we will look into the Engineering Design Process and try to create a system that traps a Monster!

Homework:

Students will get a new Reading Log tomorrow for the month of October. They will continue to read for 10-20 minutes each night. In addition to math homework this week, they will have a “chart” where they get to pick a way to practice their spelling words. That will start tomorrow (10/1).

Specials:

Monday- Music and P.E. (please make sure your child is dressed in P.E. uniform!)

Tuesday-Technology

Wednesday-Library (please make sure the library book is in the backpack on Tuesday night!)

Thursday Music, Art

Friday Spanish, Technology

Notes:

Last week, a field trip form went home for Milburn Orchards. Please return that with the money ASAP.

I accidentally made a first-year teacher mistake. As you have seen, I sent home the STAR Reports on Friday. They were supposed to be sent home this Wednesday in the Wednesday Folders. If you are waiting for siblings’ reports to be sent home, I understand. But they need to be signed and returned as soon as possible! Thanks for understanding and working on this learning curve with me :)

As always, please let me know if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.

Thanks and have a great week!

Weekly Update-Week 4

Weekly Update

Week 4

Hello Parents and Guardians. We are looking forward to a great week in first grade!

We will also continue to practice blessing ourselves in the correct form: using our right hand, going from the forehead, to the chest, to the left shoulder, and ending on the right shoulder. Anytime they can practice this and you can observe and make corrections will be helpful to their education. For example, at dinner time or prayers before bed. This chapter quiz is projected to be next Wednesday (8/2).

Language Arts: This week, your child will practice the letter sounds of short e, /g/, /w/, /v/, /j/, /ks/ (x), short u, /kw/ (qu), /y/, and /z/. The /g/ sound and short u sound are review for them as we worked on those last week in Fundations.  Students will work on rhyming words and the retelling of a biography of Alexander Graham Bell. The High Frequency Words they will learn this week are: what, for, here, little, was, my, look, has, where, with, and me. They will be writing sentences using these words.

Fundations: Students will continue to work on their phonemic awareness of letters and learn the keyword we use to remember how the letter sounds. This week students will learn p, j, l ,h, k, v, w, x and y.

Math:  This week in math, we will continue to work on problem solving with word problems. Students will also learn strategies to make 4 and 5, strategies to make 6 and 7, strategies to make 8, and strategies to make 9. The quiz for these lessons is projected to be next Thursday (8/4).

Science: Last week, we focused on what engineers do: they solve problems! This week we will put our engineering skills to the test to see if we can create a solution to putting headphones in our pockets without getting them knotted. (And no, Air Pods are not the answer.)

Homework:

Every weekday, students will read for 10-20 minutes each night. There is also math homework almost every night as well.

Specials:

Monday- Music and P.E. (please make sure your child is dressed in P.E. uniform!)

Weekly Update-Week 3

Weekly Update

Week 3

Hello Parents and Guardians. I hope you all had a great weekend! This week is jam packed with learning and assessments.

In the Classroom

Religion: This week, students will continue their work on Chapter 1. They will learn that God Gives Us Special Gifts, and most importantly, that God Promises to Love Us ALWAYS. THE CHAPTER TEST WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18. Like I said last week, I will do everything I can to make sure your child is prepared for the assessment. We will review the topics again before they take the assessment. Again, you can help your child at home by talking about that all things made my God are good, that God created all people to know and love him, the Bible is a special book about God, and that God promises to love us always. Also talk about how people can care for God’s creations like planting trees, helping others, recycling etc.

Language Arts: This week, your child will practice the letter sounds of short i, short o, d, r, b, l, and the /k/ sound like the letter k and the ending sound -ck. The letters i, o, and b are all review as we worked on those last week in Fundations. Students will work on rhyming words and the retelling of the old tale, “The Tortoise and the Hare.” The High Frequency Words they will learn this week are: play, you, he, is, she, and, said, are, do, and this. They will be writing sentences using these words.

Fundations: Students will continue to work on their phonemic awareness of letters and learn the keyword we use to remember how the letter sounds. This week students will learn short a, g, d, s, short e, r, p, and j.

Math: Students have been working hard on their math addition strategies. They will have a quiz on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17. The quiz will be on adding 0, writing addition number sentences with + and =, and using the part and whole model to add. I will send home resources with them tonight to help them study. They have also been reviewing vocabulary cards that they will take home tonight to use as a study tool as well. After the quiz, students will work on vertical addition, problem solving with word problems, strategies to make 4 and 5, strategies to make 6 and 7, and finally, strategies to make 8. This will be a more difficult week in math, so if we need to take extra time on something, we will do that.

Science: Unfortunately, last week, we didn’t get to as much science as I had hoped (wishful thinking on my part.) This week we will work on Technology and Engineering. They will learn what engineers do and how many technology tools we use every day.

Homework:

Every weekday, students will read for 10-20 minutes each night. There is also math homework almost every night as well. With the assessments this week, I will send home a math check on Monday night to get them ready for the assessment on Tuesday. And again, with the Religion assessment, if you could just talk with your child about those points I made in the Religion section, they should be prepared for the test J

Specials:

Monday- Music and P.E. (please make sure your child is dressed in P.E. uniform!)

Tuesday-Technology

Wednesday-Library (please make sure the library book is in the backpack on Tuesday night!)

Thursday Music, Art

Friday Spanish, Technology

Notes:

Students will start their STAR Assessment this week as well. (I told you, a big week for testing). They will be taking the Early Literacy portion. This will happen during their Wednesday Technology special class. I understand that they will 3 assessments in two days, however, I have confidence that they will do the best they can!
